This 4-day safari package takes you deep into one of the most important wetlands in South Asia, famous for its rich biodiversity and rare animals like the wild water buffalo. The reserve is a paradise for bird lovers with over 450 species, including migratory birds that visit every year.

On this trip, you’ll enjoy jeep safaris through lush grasslands, spot animals in their natural habitat, and learn about the local communities living nearby. The reserve is peaceful and less crowded, giving you a unique chance to connect with nature. It’s a perfect adventure for families, students, photographers, and anyone curious about wildlife.

Itinerary

You’ll arrive at Biratnagar Airport, where our guide will greet you. From here, we drive about 2 hours to the reserve’s buffer zone. Settle into your lodge and enjoy a briefing about the park and the upcoming safaris. Evening is perfect for birdwatching near the lodge.

Get up early to go on a fun jeep adventure! In the morning, when everything comes to life, you can see animals like wild water buffalo, deer, and many kinds of birds. After food and some rest, there is another jeep safari in the late afternoon where you can see different animals getting ready for the night. The lodge is where we had dinner and slept the next night.

Take a jeep tour of the reserve's more remote parts during the day. Meet Tharu people in the area, learn about their history, and enjoy their warm hospitality. Nature and culture come together on this day, which will help you learn more about how people live in this special part of Nepal. Go back to the lodge for dinner and the night.

Useful Information

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kositappu Wildlife Reserve is from October to April. During these months, the weather is dry and pleasant, which makes spotting wildlife much easier. The park is especially beautiful in the winter when migratory birds arrive from colder regions, filling the skies with colorful feathers. Avoid the rainy monsoon season (June to September) because heavy rains can make the trails muddy and wildlife harder to see.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be going on jeep safaris and short walks, so sturdy, comfortable shoes are a must.
  • Binoculars: These help you see animals and birds from a distance without disturbing them.
  • Camera: To capture amazing moments of wildlife and landscapes.
  • Clothing: Layer your clothes. Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, so bring a light jacket or sweater. During the day, light and breathable clothes work best.
  • Sunscreen and hat: To protect yourself from the sun, especially during safari drives.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes and other bugs can be common, so insect spray is helpful.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is important during outdoor activities.

Health and Safety

No special vaccinations are required to visit the Kositappu Wildlife Reserve. However, it’s wise to have routine vaccines up to date, like tetanus and typhoid. Bring any personal medications you might need, plus a basic first-aid kit. The reserve is safe, but it’s important to follow your guide’s instructions to avoid any wildlife dangers. Keep a safe distance from animals and never try to feed or approach them.

Wildlife Watching Tips

Animals are most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon, so jeep safaris are scheduled during these times for the best chance to see wildlife. Keep noise to a minimum and be patient — sometimes animals hide or take time to appear. Your guide knows the best spots, so trust their experience!

Cultural Etiquette

During your visit to the nearby Tharu villages, remember to respect local traditions and customs. Always ask permission before taking photos of people or their homes. The Tharu people are friendly and proud of their culture, so engaging politely and showing interest will make your visit memorable.

Accommodation and Facilities

The lodges near the reserve offer comfortable rooms with basic facilities like beds, clean bathrooms, and electricity. However, because the reserve is in a remote area, power outages can happen, so it’s good to carry a flashlight or headlamp. Meals typically include fresh, local Nepali dishes, and the food is cooked hygienically. Wi-Fi is usually limited or unavailable, making this a great opportunity to disconnect and enjoy nature fully.

Environmental Responsibility

Kositappu Wildlife Reserve is a protected area, so it’s important to keep it clean. Avoid littering and always carry your trash out with you. Use eco-friendly products where possible and respect the natural environment by staying on designated paths during safaris.
