Overview

If you are short on time but want to experience both nature and culture in Nepal, the Dhulikhel Namobuddha hiking trail is a perfect choice. A mere drive away from Kathmandu, this day trek is a much-needed relief from the city, going through peaceful trails, lush forests, and picturesque Newari villages. Dhulikhel is famous for its breathtaking Himalayan view, where you get to see a series of peaks like Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, and even Mt. Everest on clear mornings.

The crowning glory of the trek is reaching Namobuddha Monastery, a spiritual Buddhist temple where it is believed that Lord Buddha in a past life sacrificed his body to a starving tigress and her cubs. The monastery is elegantly placed on top of a hill, surveying prayer flags, golden stupas, and chanting monks. It is a peaceful place that allows you to connect with spirituality and enjoy a moment of calm.

This hike is easy, family-friendly, and can be completed in a single day, making it one of the most loved short hikes near Kathmandu. Along the way, you’ll pass through rice terraces, small villages, and pine forests, giving you a taste of authentic rural Nepal.

Itinerary

Your day begins early with a scenic drive of about 1.5 hours from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel, a Newari town known for its cultural heritage and Himalayan views. From here, we start our hike, walking along terraced fields and charming village trails. The hike is easy and gradual, perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing walk in nature.

As you walk, you’ll enjoy the serene countryside atmosphere, fresh air, and stunning mountain views. The trail continues through pine forests and rural settlements where you may encounter friendly locals going about their daily lives. After about 3 to 4 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Namobuddha Monastery.

At Namobuddha, you can explore the monastery, spin prayer wheels, and learn about the powerful Buddhist legend associated with this sacred place. We’ll enjoy a peaceful moment here and have lunch at a local restaurant nearby, with simple but delicious Nepali food.

Later in the afternoon, we’ll hike down to the road where our vehicle will be waiting. The drive back to Kathmandu takes around 1.5 hours, and we’ll arrive by evening.
