Overview
The Gokiyo Ri Trek is one of the most scenic trekking routes in the Everest region, offering jaw-dropping views and unique Himalayan landscapes. This 15-day journey takes you deep into the Khumbu Valley, where turquoise lakes, snowy peaks, and glaciers come together to create a magical setting. Unlike the Everest Base Camp route, the Gokiyo Ri Trek offers a quieter path with equally breathtaking views. From the top of Gokiyo Ri at 5,357m, you’ll witness a panoramic sweep of the world’s highest mountains, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu.
Along the way, you’ll pass through traditional Sherpa villages, lush forests, suspension bridges, and alpine pastures before reaching the high Himalayas. Nights are spent in cozy teahouses, where you’ll enjoy hearty meals and the warm hospitality of local families. The trek is designed with proper acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Gokyo village, ensuring both safety and comfort. If you’re looking for a trek that combines Himalayan grandeur with peaceful trails, the Gokiyo Ri Trek is a perfect choice.
Itinerary
Your journey begins as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. A member of our team will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the city. The bustling streets, colorful shops, and vibrant atmosphere of Kathmandu immediately introduce you to Nepal’s culture. In the evening, you’ll attend a trek briefing where our guide will explain the route, check your gear, and answer your questions. You’ll enjoy a welcome dinner with traditional Nepali dishes. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu. Dinner included.
Early morning, you’ll board a scenic flight to Lukla, often called the “Gateway to Everest.” The flight itself is an adventure, with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. From Lukla, you’ll begin your trek with a gentle descent through pine forests and Sherpa villages. The path follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges draped with prayer flags. After around 3–4 hours of easy walking, you’ll reach Phakding, a riverside settlement. Overnight at a teahouse in Phakding. Dinner included.
Today’s trek is more challenging, with several uphill climbs. You’ll cross suspension bridges and enter Sagarmatha National Park, where your permits are checked. The trail winds through forests of pine and rhododendron, with glimpses of Thamserku peak in the distance. After a steady climb up the famous Hillary Bridge, you’ll finally arrive at Namche Bazaar—the bustling heart of the Khumbu region. This vibrant town has markets, bakeries, and stunning views of Everest if the weather is clear. Overnight at a teahouse in Namche Bazaar. Dinner included.
This rest day helps your body adjust to the altitude. You won’t just sit around, though—you’ll take a short hike to Syangboche or the Everest View Hotel, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. You can also explore Namche’s narrow alleys, visit the Sherpa museum, or interact with locals at the Saturday market if it’s the right day. This blend of light activity and rest prepares you for higher altitudes. Overnight at a teahouse in Namche Bazaar. Dinner included.
The trail climbs gradually out of Namche with breathtaking views of Kangtega and Thamserku. You’ll pass through rhododendron forests, which bloom beautifully in spring. As the altitude increases, the trees thin out, and yak pastures appear. The air is cooler and fresher here, with wide Himalayan landscapes. After about 5–6 hours of walking, you’ll arrive at Dole, a small village with a handful of teahouses and simple comforts. Overnight at a teahouse in Dole. Dinner included.
Today’s trek is shorter but steeper. The trail climbs steadily along a ridge with views of Cho Oyu in the distance. You’ll walk past alpine pastures and streams where yaks graze. Machhermo is known in Sherpa legend as the place where a Yeti was once spotted. It’s a beautiful spot with a few lodges and incredible mountain views. You’ll have the afternoon to rest and enjoy the high-altitude scenery. Overnight at a teahouse in Machhermo. Dinner included.
This is one of the most scenic days of the trek. The trail ascends gently into the Gokyo Valley, crossing small streams and glacial moraines. Along the way, you’ll pass the first and second Gokyo Lakes, which shimmer in turquoise color against the backdrop of snowy peaks. Finally, you’ll reach Gokyo village, set beside the third lake and watched over by Cho Oyu. The view is unforgettable. Overnight at a teahouse in Gokyo. Dinner included.
A rest day in Gokyo is both necessary and rewarding. You can take a short hike to the 4th and 5th Gokyo Lakes or visit the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier—the longest glacier in Nepal. This is a photographer’s paradise, with stunning reflections of peaks in the clear water. Resting here also helps you prepare for the climb to Gokiyo Ri. Overnight at a teahouse in Gokyo. Dinner included.
The highlight of your trek arrives today. You’ll rise before dawn to climb Gokiyo Ri. The steep ascent takes 2–3 hours, but from the top, you’ll be rewarded with one of the finest views in the Himalayas: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu all in one frame. After soaking in the sunrise panorama, you’ll descend to Gokyo for breakfast, then continue trekking down to Dole for the night. Overnight at a teahouse in Dole. Dinner included.
Descending feels easier, and the oxygen-rich air helps you recover. The trail takes you through forests and yak pastures, with chances to spot mountain goats and pheasants. You’ll return to the lively town of Namche, where you can enjoy a warm shower, bakeries, and a good night’s rest. Overnight at a teahouse in Namche Bazaar. Dinner included.
Your final trekking day retraces the trail along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and passing villages filled with prayer flags and mani walls. It’s a long but rewarding day as you reach Lukla, where your trek began. Celebrate your journey with your guide and porters. Overnight at a teahouse in Lukla. Dinner included.
In the morning, you’ll take the return flight to Kathmandu. After arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. You can spend the afternoon relaxing, shopping for souvenirs, or enjoying the lively Thamel district. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu. Dinner included.
Today, you’ll join a guided cultural tour of Kathmandu. Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhanath Stupa. This day gives you insight into Nepal’s spiritual and cultural richness. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu. Dinner included.
This is a free day to relax or explore more of Kathmandu at your own pace. You can visit Patan Durbar Square, shop for handicrafts, or simply rest. This day also works as a buffer in case of earlier flight delays. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu. Dinner included.
After breakfast, our team will transfer you to the airport for your international flight. We’ll say goodbye with warm wishes, hoping to see you again for another Himalayan adventure.

Useful Information
The Gokiyo Ri Trek takes you above 5,000m, so altitude is a key factor. To keep you safe, we’ve added two acclimatization days—one in Namche Bazaar and one in Gokyo. Drink plenty of water, walk slowly, and listen to your body. Our guides are trained to recognize early signs of altitude sickness.
Accommodation will be in local teahouses. They are simple but cozy, with warm blankets and hearty meals. As you go higher, facilities become more basic—expect shared toilets and simple rooms. Hot showers and charging points are available for a small fee.
The weather can change quickly in the Himalayas. Spring and autumn offer the clearest skies and best views, while winter brings cold temperatures and snow. Summer is rainy but less crowded. Pack warm clothing, good trekking boots, a waterproof jacket, and layering options.
Travel insurance is mandatory for this trek and must include helicopter evacuation coverage. Our team will help in emergencies, but having insurance ensures you are financially protected.
